Application for an extension of a long-term visa

As a third-country national with a valid long-term visa issued for less than 1 year, you can extend your visa under certain conditions.

A long-term visa including extensions can be valid in total for a maximum of 1 year.

  1. If your current long-term visa is valid for a period shorter than one year, you can apply to extend the visa repeatedly but only up to the total period of one year.
  2. If you want to stay in the Czech Republic for a period longer than one year, you must apply for a long-term residence permit.

If you hold a valid long-term visa issued for a period shorter than 1 year and you are going to stay in the Czech Republic for the same purpose for which you have stayed until now.

At the latest the last day of your current visa’s validity, at the earliest 90 days before your long-term visa’s expiration.

  • a proof of payment for the insurance stated on the proof of travel medical insurance;
  • medical report.

Kde a jak službu řešit

You can apply in person at the Ministry of the Interior office or by post.

If you want to apply in person, make an appointment online or by phone beforehand.

Kolik budete platit

The administrative fee is 1 000 CZK. 

If you apply in person, the administrative fee must be paid by credit card at a Ministry of the Interior office.

If you apply by post, the administrative fee must be paid by bank transfer via the payment details generator on the Information Portal for Foreigners.

You do not pay the administrative fee in the following cases:

  • An application has been filed to extend the validity of a visa of a pupil, student, postgraduate student or accompanying teacher that travel for the purpose of studies or vocational preparation in the field of education,
  • an application for an extension of stay for a visa for a child under 6 years of age.

Jaký má služba benefit

You will be able to extend your residence permit and continue your stay in the Czech Republic. With a valid residence permit, you can leave the Czech Republic repeatedly and return again. You can also travel within the Schengen area without the need for a visa.

Možnosti odvolání

You can appeal against the decision within 15 days of the delivery of the decision. You can file the appeal in person or send it by mail (or electronically) to the given office of the MOI CR or to the head office of the MOI.
