A long-term residence permit is a residence permit intended for third countries citizens who want to reside in the Czech Republic for a specific purpose for more than one year.
This applies to you if
A long-term residence permit is always issued for a specific purpose. You can apply for this type of residence permit if you hold a long-term visa issued for the same purpose for which a long-term residence permit is requested, as long as this purpose continues to exist.
The following long-term residence permits are exceptions (i.e. it is possible to apply for a long-term residence permit without prior residence on the basis of a long-term visa):
- long-term residence permit for the purpose of family reunification in the Czech Republic;
- long-term residence permit of a foreign national who is a resident of another EU Member State;
- long-term residence permit for the purpose of studies;
- long-term residence permit for the purpose of scientific research;
- long-term residence permit for the purpose of investment;
- employee card;
- Blue card;
- intra-company employee transfer card.
When to use this service
The conditions for applying vary depending on your residency status. In general, your application must be submitted no later than the last day of your current residence permit.

You must apply for a long-term residence permit or a new long-term residence permit (change of purpose) in person at a Ministry of the Interior office.
If you want to report the change in person, make an appointment online or by phone beforehand.
In the case of first-time applications, the application must be submitted at one of the Czech Republic's diplomatic missions.
How much will you pay
- For applications submitted in the Czech Republic you will pay 2 500 CZK, for persons under 15 years of age 1 000 CZK. The administrative fee must be paid by credit card at a Ministry of the Interior office.

What is the benefit of this service
With a valid residence permit, you can reside in the Czech Republic for a long period of time for your chosen purpose. You can also leave and re-enter the Czech Republic repeatedly and travel within the Schengen Area without a visa.
Appeal options
You can appeal against the decision within 15 days of the delivery of the decision. You can file the appeal in person or send it by mail (or electronically) to the given office of the MOI CR or to the head office of the MOI.
